    Surgical Services
For many people who are obese, surgery is the most effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of obesity-related health problems, including diabetes and heart disease. You will work with your team to figure out if surgery is the best route for you.

    • Gastric Bypass Surgery - A highly effective, long-term treatment for morbid obesity. In this procedure, the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and attaches a section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine.
    • Sleeve Gastrectomy - Also called gastric sleeve surgery, is a laparoscopic procedure where a thin, vertical sleeve of stomach is created using a stapling device. The sleeve is about the size of a banana and limits the amount of food you can eat. The rest of the stomach is removed.
Both surgical options are part of a larger weight loss program and include:
    • Monthly clinic visits
    • Nutritional Counseling
    • Psychological Evaluation
    • Exercise and fitness instruction
    • Postoperative Follow-up
    • Support Groups and Education

Are you a good candidate for bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery is an effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of obesity-related health problems. It might be a good choice for you if these statements are true:
    • You are morbidly obese - This means you have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, or a BMI of at least 35 plus an obesity-related disease such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
    • You have tried to lose weight using other methods and they have not worked.
    • You are committed to making the changes necessary for long-term success - Surgery is only the beginning of the weight loss journey. To lose weight and keep it off (which most bariatric patients are able to do), you will have to commit to making healthy choices.
